Is Your Dog Eating Grass?
Dogs are carnivores but you will find that these creatures will at times eat grass. This may shock you as to why these pets will eat the grass. Eating of grass is a normal behavior for dogs though not all the dogs may do this. The question as to why dogs eat grass has been, and ongoing debate by the veterinarians but they have not been able to come up with an answer that is concrete. Both the sick and the healthy dogs will be seen at times munching the blades of grass. It has been assumed that the main reason why the dogs of today will eat the grass is because they are not getting all the nutrients in their diet since they do not need to hunt for food anymore. For these dogs to overcome the deficiency they have, they will eat the grass. For this reason, many dog owners living in the urban centers will find the grass supplements to give their pets. You will find that your backyard is ruined when you let your dog do their own business in the backyard.
It is also believed that when these pets have an upset stomach, it could lead to them eating the grass. It is speculated that the dogs will eat the grass or also other greens when they are not feeling well so that they induce vomiting. However, studies have shown that only a small percentage of these animals will vomit after they have taken the grass.
There may be the simple reason that your pet enjoys eating grass and that is why they are doing it. Not many dogs will portray this behavior, but for those that do, it will be for the simple reason that they like. It will be perfectly safe for your dog to consumer the grass as long as it does not have any fertilizers or the pesticides. After you have treated the lawn with the pesticides, you should not allow the dog to eat the grass before two weeks have passed.
You will also realize that these animals will eat grass out of boredom. For these dogs to release the anxiety they get when not involved in enough activity, they will opt to eat grass. You need to make sure that the dog is getting enough exercise and you need to take time to play with them each day. You should also find several toys that will offer both the physical and the mental stimulation.
